Hot Mulled Cider is the quintessential winter drink, combining the rich, sweet flavor of fresh apple cider with the warmth of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The citrusy brightness of orange and the depth of allspice and cardamom make this a fragrant, comforting beverage that’s perfect for chilly days. Simmered to perfection and optionally spiked with a touch of bourbon, brandy, or rum, this cider is ideal for holiday gatherings or quiet evenings by the fire.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 gallon Apple cider
  • 1 Orange
  • 12 Whole Cloves
  • 4 3 inch Cinnamon Stick
  • 15 Allspice Berries
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 7 Whole Cardamom Pods
  • 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • Orange Slices for garnish
  • Cinnamon Sticks for serving

Instructions

Simmer the Cider with Orange and Spices:

  • Pour the apple cider into a 3-quart saucepan. Cover and heat over medium-high.

Prepare the Orange:

  • While the cider heats up, use a vegetable peeler to remove a couple of thick strips of peel from the orange. Press about half of the cloves into the peeled part of the orange. If you prefer, you can quarter or slice the orange and add the slices and cloves separately.

Add Ingredients:

  • Place the prepared orange, orange peel strips, remaining cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, ground nutmeg, cardamom pods, and brown sugar into the saucepan with the cider. Cover and bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.

Strain and Serve:

  • Using a fine mesh sieve, strain the hot mulled cider to remove the orange, cloves, and other spices.

Optional: Add a splash of bourbon, brandy, or rum before serving if you want to spike it up.

  • Serve hot. Garnish each cup with an orange slice or a cinnamon stick if desired.
