Where it came from
The Black Russian came first, sometime around 1949 in Brussels at the Hotel Metropole, when bartender Gustave Tops built a vodka and Kahlua highball for the American ambassador to Luxembourg. The White Russian arrived 16 years later when someone added cream to soften it. The earliest printed reference is in the Oakland Tribune in 1965.
The Big Lebowski put the White Russian on the world map in 1998. The Dude drinks nine of them across the film. The drink was already a classic; the movie made it cult.
What it tastes like
Sweet coffee from the Kahlua, smooth body from the cream, vodka kick underneath keeping it grown-up. Drinks like an iced coffee dessert with extra horsepower.
Cream is the variable. Half-and-half drinks lighter; heavy cream drinks like dessert. Most bars split the difference with thickened or pouring cream.
The technique
Build in a rocks glass over plenty of ice. Pour vodka, then Kahlua, then float the cream over the back of a bar spoon so it sits on top in a layer. Stir gently before drinking, or leave layered for the photo.
Cream goes in last. Pouring cream first ruins the layered look and gives you streaks. Use cold ingredients and a cold glass for best results.

Ingredient Spotlight
The bottles that make or break this drink.
The vodka
- Use
- Plain neutral vodka (Smirnoff, Absolut, Tito's, Stoli)
- Skip
- Flavoured vodka (clashes with the coffee)
- Why
- You want a clean spirit. The Kahlua and cream do the flavour work.
The Kahlua
- Use
- Kahlua Original (Mexico)
- Try
- Mr Black, Tia Maria, or any cold-brew coffee liqueur
- Why
- Kahlua is the standard. Mr Black tastes more like real coffee. Both work.
The cream
- Use
- Heavy cream, thickened cream, or pouring cream (35%+ fat)
- Skip
- Long-life UHT cream (slightly off taste)
- Why
- Full-fat cream layers properly and stays smooth. Lower-fat creams curdle more easily.

Other creamy and coffee classics that drink like dessert.
What if I don't have…
Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.
Bourbon turns it into a Tennessee White Russian (rich, oakier). Rum makes a Dirty Banana cousin. Both work, neither is canonical.
Tia Maria, Mr Black, Bailey's Coffee, or any coffee liqueur. Cold brew concentrate plus 10ml simple syrup is an emergency option.
Half-and-half, full-fat oat milk (Oatly Barista), or coconut cream. All thinner than heavy cream but workable.
Bump Kahlua to 45ml. Or add a 10ml drizzle of chocolate syrup before the cream.
Up the vodka to 60ml. The cream and Kahlua easily absorb the extra alcohol.
Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.
What is in a White Russian?
Vodka, Kahlua (or any coffee liqueur), and fresh cream over ice. Classic spec: 50ml vodka, 25ml Kahlua, 30ml heavy cream.
How do you make a White Russian?
Fill a rocks glass with ice. Pour 50ml vodka and 25ml Kahlua. Slowly float 30ml heavy cream over the back of a bar spoon so it sits on top. Stir gently before drinking, or leave layered.
Where did the White Russian come from?
The Black Russian came first, in 1949 Brussels. The White Russian appeared in the mid 1960s when someone added cream. The earliest printed reference is the Oakland Tribune in 1965. The Big Lebowski (1998) made the drink famous.
White Russian vs Black Russian?
Same drink, minus the cream. A Black Russian is just vodka and Kahlua over ice. Adding cream turns it into a White Russian.
Should you stir a White Russian?
Up to you. Layered looks better in photos. Stirred drinks more like a coffee milkshake. The Dude stirs.
What cream is best in a White Russian?
Heavy cream, thickened cream, or pouring cream with 35 percent fat or higher. Half-and-half works but is thinner. Skim milk turns it into a sad Black Russian with milk.
Can you make a White Russian with milk?
You can. It's called a lazy White Russian or a Caucasian. Drinks lighter, less rich, less canonical.
How strong is a White Russian?
Around 18 to 20 percent ABV in the glass. The cream hides the alcohol entirely. Drink slow.
Is a White Russian the same as a Mudslide?
No. A Mudslide adds Bailey's Irish Cream (or sometimes ice cream) and is usually blended. White Russian is a stirred or layered rocks drink. Same family, different cousin.
What glass should I use?
A rocks glass (Old Fashioned). Short, wide, holds about 250ml. Goes great with one large ice cube.
